The Southern and Northern Province Provincial Elders’ Conference have designated Sunday, May 18, 2014 as the Prayer Day for Star Mountain and Middle East Peace.
The Moravian work at Star Mountain began in 1867. At the Synod of 2006, our Province became a member of Churches for Middle East Peace (CMEP).
A bulletin insert provides basic information about Star Mountain and the work of Churches for Middle East Peace. Congregations are invited to include this in worship bulletins in March. In April specific prayer concerns and additional resources for observing the Prayer Day will be provided.
The coming months are important ones as our country and others are giving increased attention to achieving a just and lasting peace for Israel and Palestine, and the need to support our sisters and brothers at Star Mountain is certainly ongoing.
Sunday, March 2, we invite congregations and fellowship to observe Unity Prayer Day.
The Moravian Church (Unitas Fratrum) will celebrate 557 years of witness and service to our Lord on March 1. At the end of 2011, our Unity passed the milestone of having 1 million members.
Our congregations around the world will join in prayer for God’s continued blessing and leading. To assist with this time of prayer the following resources are available: Unity Prayer Watch Topics 2014, and Prayer for the Worldwide Moravian Unity.
March 2 is also the day for receiving the annual Unity Offering. Each year Moravian congregations across our world-wide Unity contribute to the Unity Offering to support a particular ministry in one of our Provinces. The 2014 offering will support ministry in the interior of Suriname.
The Rev. Reynard Pansa, Chair of the Suriname Provincial Board, has written that funds will be used to support social ministries to those in extreme poverty who lack proper nourishment, housing and other necessities of life; for work to overcome violence against women and children; for coordinated efforts between the church, schools, medical care and women’s group; for training for congregational leaders, and for regular outreach to areas where there are no ordained pastors.
Your congregation is invited to receive this offering on Sunday, March 2. Offering envelopes are available through the BWM/Mission Society office (Sheila Beaman, 336.773.1732) Funds received may be directed to the Treasurer’s Office and should be clearly identified as “Unity Offering”.
The North Carolina General Assembly recently enacted House Bill 998 which becomes effective for taxable years beginning on or after January 1, 2014. Under this new law, all taxpayers will pay a lower rate and be granted a higher standard deduction. Taxpayers may no longer claim a personal exemption for themselves, their spouse, children, or any other qualifying dependents. Additionally, many deductions and tax credits that impact North Carolina withholding tax are no longer available for tax years beginning on or after January 1.
The new form must be completed by the employee and provided to the employer so the correct amount of State income tax is withheld for any payment periods beginning on or after January 1, 2014.
Likewise, all recipients of pension or annuity payments must complete and provide to their payer a new Withholding Certificate for Pension or Annuity Payments, Form NC-4P, in order to withhold the correct amount of State income tax for any pension payment periods beginning on or after January 1, 2014.

Since 1957 the Unity Prayer Watch has assured that prayer for the work and witness of our world-wide Moravian Church is being offered somewhere in the world 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Prayer Watch is a renewal of the “hourly intercession”, begun in Herrnhut in 1727 which continued uninterrupted for 100 years.
The time assigned to members of our Southern Province is December 31, 2013 to January 18, 2014. A schedule of prayer has been provided to each congregation. The Unity Prayer Watch topics can be found by following this link.
